Fighter Archetype: Marine

Marines are infantry soldiers specially trained for fighting on board ships.

Class Features Modifications

Weapon and Armor Proficiency: Fighters with the Marine variant are proficient with Light and Medium armors, and with Bucklers and Light Shields. (Lose Heavy Armor Proficiency and Heavy and Tower Shield Proficiencies)

Endurance: Gain Endurance as a bonus feat.

Trained Swimmer: When calculating Swim bonuses, do not double your armor check penalty. Furthermore, you gain a bonus to swim checks equal to half your Marine level (Minimum 0).

These abilities cease if you wear Heavy Armor, a Heavy or Tower Shield, or carry anything more than a light load.

Class Skills

Acropbatics (Dex), Climb (Str), Craft (Int), Escape Artist (Dex), Intimidate (Cha), Knowledge (engineering) (Int), Knowledge (geography) (Int), Profession (Wis), Survival (Wis), and Swim (Str).

Author's Note: Admittedly, not a very useful variant for most adventures (read: Bring on the low Utility rating), but anyone who has ever had a character drown in half-plate will understand the reasoning behind this.

Heavy armor is a deathtrap in a ship-based adventure, so most smart PC's will avoid it anyways. This just balances out the loss and allows low-level fighters to be a little more capable at sea...
