Favored Soul

A Favoured Soul is one who does not worship a deity, but is an extension of that deity. While a Cleric labours in the service of her god, a Favoured Soul walks among others, knowing the true face of their god. Whereas a Cleric is gifted power by his deity, a Favoured Soul uses a piece of her deity's power directly.

Within each Favoured Soul is a connection to their deity, which grants them their magic, and martial prowess with their god's favoured weapon. This link can be gifted to anyone, but is usually only given by a deity to a mortal who seems to share their mindset, and who would give over their life to service in their master's name.

Alignment: Any, but may not be more than one step from their deity. It is usually the same as their deity.

Deity: A Favoured Soul must choose a deity. They may not devote themselves to any other source of divine power, as Clerics may.

Class Features

Weapon and Armor Proficiencies: A Favoured Soul is proficient with Light and Medium armour, all simple weapons and her deity's favoured weapon. She may cast in any armour without incurring any form of spell failure.

Spells: A Favoured Soul is a divine spellcaster, who draws spells from the Cleric spell list. Unlike a Cleric, the Favoured Soul only knows a certain number of spells in total, as shown on the table below. She does not need to prepare her spells, and may cast any spell she knows spontaneously. In order to cast spells of a particular level, she requires a Charisma score of 10 + the spell's level. The Difficulty Class for saving throws against the Favoured Soul's spells is 10 + the spell's level + the Favoured Soul's Charisma modifier.

A Favoured Soul may not cast spell with an alignment descriptor opposing their own alignment or their deity's.

Orisons (Sp): A Favoured Soul can prepare a number of orisons, or 0-level spells, each day, as noted on the table below. These spells are cast like any other spell, but they are not expended when cast and may be used again.

Aura
: All Favoured Souls are, in a strange way, a part of their deity. A Favoured Soul of a Good, Evil, Lawful or Chaotic deity has the appropriate aura or auras.

Divine Language: A Good-Aligned Favoured Soul, or one who worships a Good God, speaks Celestial as well as any other languages. An Evil-aligned Favoured Soul, or one who worships an Evil deity, speaks either Infernal or Abyssal: if the deity or Favoured Soul is Lawful, they speak Infernal, if one or the other is Chaotic the Favoured Soul speaks Abyssal. If neither is Lawful or Chaotic, the character may choose one of the two languages. If both character and deity are neutral with respect to Good and Evil, the player may choose between the Good and Evil choices, but if either is Lawful they may not speak Abyssal and if either is Chaotic they may not choose Infernal.

Deity's Weapon Focus (Su): At 2nd level, a Favoured Soul gains Weapon Focus with her deity's favoured weapon. At 11th level, a Favoured Soul gains Weapon Specialisation with her deity's favoured weapon. Also, she may treat her Favoured Soul level - 5 as her fighter level for any feat which specifies her deity's favoured weapon only, which has a number of fighter levels as a prerequisite. For example, if she wishes to take Greater Weapon Focus (Deity's Favoured Weapon) she may take it at 13th level Favoured Soul (13-5=8).

Deity's Weapon (Su): At 3rd level, a Favoured Soul's attacks with her deity's favoured weapon are treated as her deity's alignment for the purposes of overcoming damage reduction. In addition, she adds 1 Holy or Unholy damage to her attacks with ther deity's favoured weapon: if her deity or she is good it is Holy, if either is Evil it is Unholy, if neither is Good or Evil, the Favoured Soul may choose. The choice between good and evil must be the same as was made for Divine Language.

At 8th Level, this bonus damage becomes d3. At 13th, it becomes d6. At 18th it becomes 2d4.

Wings: At 4th level, small wings begin to sprout from the Favoured Soul's back. These are feathered if the Favoured Soul or their Deity is Good, and bat-like if either is Evil. If neither is Good or Evil, the Favoured Soul may choose. The choice between good and evil must be the same as was made for Divine Language.

These wings grant +5 ft to movement on a successful fly check (DC 15), but do not allow the Favoured Soul to actually fly.

At 9th level, the wings can grant +10 ft to movement on a successful check (DC 19). At 14th level, the wings can grant +15ft to movement on a successful check (DC 23).

The attempted DC must be chosen before the roll. Any form of the wings reduces fall damage as if the Favoured Soul had fallen half the distance on a successful fly check (DC 15), as the wings slow the descent, assuming the Favoured Soul is conscious at the time. If the Favoured Soul has wings from another source, this class feature does not increase movement.
Instead, at 4th level the original wings become stronger and grant a +2 on fly checks. At 9th, this bonus becomes +4 and at 14th it becomes +6.

Energy Resistance (Su): At 5th level, a Favoured Soul chooses an energy type, other than positive or negative, and gains resistance 5 against that type. At 10th level and 15th level, the character gains resistance 5 against another energy type of her choosing.

Deity's Vessel (Su): A Favoured Soul now houses a piece of her deity within her. Her wings now fully form, and allow her to fly with Good Mobility (if she has wings from another form, improve her mobility by one step to at least Good). She may also choose one type of Energy from the 3 she chose for Energy Resistance. She is now immune to energy of that type. She also now changes her creature type to Outsider (Native), unless she is already an outsider (of any type).
