Spellslinger

While many Wizards spend their time in arcane libraries or in dusty tombs searching for arcane secrets, some lack the luxury of stable living. These mages make up for their lack of security with a talent at having the right spell for the right encounter. With frequent practice (or need) these mages take the skill of spell memorization to the next level.

Class Features

Weapon and Armor Proficiency: The spellslinger gains no proficiency with any weapons or armor.

Spells Per Day: When becoming a Spellslinger, you may add levels to a previous arcane spell casting class for purposes of gaining spells per day.

Sneak Attack (Ex): This functions as the rogue ability of the same name.

Bonus Mastered Spell (Ex): These bonus feats are gained at 2nd and 6th level and are drawn from the same pool of feats wizards have access to: Metamagic, Item Creation or Spell Mastery

Signature Supremacy (Ex): At 3rd level you become so familiar with your mastered spells that you may convert any 4th level or lower prepared spell for a mastered spell of the same or lower level, just as Clerics may swap out prepared spells for Cure spells. After obtaining 7th level you may swap out up to 9th level spells in the same fashion.

Arcane Remediation (Ex): At 4th level the spellslinger has spent enough time training his arcane skills that he has overcome some of the setback his survival skills placed on his arcane training. The spellslinger may treat one level in a non-spellcasting class he already possesses as though it increased his effective wizard level by one, for the purposes of spells per day, spells known, and maximum spell level. Essentially, you may treat one non-spellcasting class level as though it were an additional wizard level for spells. Thus a 3rd level wizard, 2nd level rogue transitioning from 3rd to 4th level spellslinger would see his equivalent spellcasting level go from 6 (3 from wizard, and 3 from spellslinger) to 8 (3 from wizard, 1 from rogue and 4 from spellslinger).

Master Spellslinger (Ex): At 10th level you may apply the full benefits of the Preferred Spell feat to any spell that you have mastered, as per the Spell Mastery feat or the Bonus Mastered Spell class ability.

Author's Note: This class is taken from The Lost Empires of Faerun. I claim no right to this class concept, and post it in homage to a WOTC concept. I have contacted WOTC and the Mods of this site pursuing the copyright involved in adapting this class. Please refrain from posting this class due to copyright concerns until we have adequately discussed those concerns. I am posting this so you know what sort of adaptation I plan to implement. I have made minor changes to it to reflect what seem to be balance, and style issues. Notably, the original author intended the class to be available much earlier but a misprint required knowledge of 5th level spells, making the class's 10th level ability unavailable before epic play. I've lowered that requirement to 2nd level spells so a character can expect to use the primary abilities in reasonable play levels. For those critical of the now lowered spell requirement on balance, keep in mind the character gains little in the way or rogue abilities while losing 2 levels of spellcasting, delaying 9th level spells till 19th level, essentially cutting it off in all but the longest of campaigns. I added some enhanced abilities to the class after playtesting for a few months when I realized that after the Pathfinder conversion the class fell significantly behind other arcane prestige classes.
