Class Features

Weapon and Armor Proficiency: Virtuosos gain no proficiencies with any weapons or armor.

Savant: Virtuosos are almost supernatural masters of their chosen type of performance, but as a result their skill at other kinds of performance suffers. Virtuosos receive a bonus equal to half their class level on any Perform skill in which they have at least 7 ranks and Skill Focus (Perform). However, any Perform skill for which they do not meet these requirements is treated as a non-class skill, regardless of the Virtuoso's classes. Perform skills for which a Virtuoso receives a bonus from Savant are referred to as his favored performances.

Bardic Performance: This functions as the Bard ability of the same name. Levels of Virtuoso stack with levels of any other class that grants this ability to determine the Virtuoso's total effective bard level.

Virtuoso Performance: At 1st level and every odd level, a Virtuoso gains a special use of bardic performance called a virtuoso performance, chosen from the list below. Although many of the names refer to musical performances, a Virtuoso isn’t actually so limited—for example, an actor could perform a “sustaining soliloquy” or “sustaining dance” rather than a sustaining song. Virtuoso performances draw from the same pool of rounds per day of performance as bardic performance, although many consume multiple rounds of bardic performance per use.

A Virtuoso may only use his favored performances in conjunction with a virtuoso performance. Starting a virtuoso performance is always a full-round action that provokes attacks of opportunity, and maintaining it is always a standard action that provokes attacks of opportunity. If a Virtuoso's favored performance requires an instrument or other such tool, he must have it at hand the entire time he maintains his virtuoso performance. In any situation in which a spellcaster would have to make a Concentration check to successfully cast a spell (such as upon taking damage), a Virtuoso must make a Concentration check at the same DC to maintain his virtuoso performance.

Unless otherwise noted, a virtuoso performance effects all creatures - friend and foe - within its radius. However, upon starting a performance, the Virtuoso may choose to exclude a number of creatures equal to his class level from its effects; he may change which creatures he is excluding as a move action while maintaining the performance.

Calumny (Su): With this performance, a Virtuoso can attempt to damage the reputation of his foes. Upon starting this performance, the Virtuoso chooses a target, who must either be present or the Virtuoso must know his name. A Virtuoso must spend 10 consecutive rounds maintaining this performance, with each round counting as one round of bardic performance. At the end of his performance, the Virtuoso makes a Perform check with the same skill he made his performance with, affecting everyone within 60 feet. Treat this a Diplomacy check to influence attitude, with a DC one step worse than the average attitude of those affected towards the target (for example, if most of those affected are Indifferent towards the target, the DC is 20 + the target's Charisma modifier). On a success, the attitude of those affected towards the target is reduced by one step. This Perform check suffers a -5 penalty if the intended target is not present, and a -5 penalty if the Virtuoso has never met the target personally; these penalties are cumulative. The GM may assess a bonus to the Perform check if the Virtuoso knows and reveals some sort of damaging secret about the target. On a failure the Virtuoso may not attempt Calumny against the same target for 24 hours.

A 6th level Virtuoso may improve this performance by spending an additional round of bardic performance per round. If he does, the DC of the perform check increases by 5, but success worsens affected attitudes by two steps.

Hymn of Peace (Su): This soothing performance quiets discord. Anyone within 30 feet of the Virtuoso is affected as per the spell Calm Emotions for the duration of the performance. Subjects get no saving throw as long as their attitude towards the Virtuoso is not hostile; the save DC for hostile subjects is 10 + Virtuoso class level + Charisma modifier. Those who make their saving throw are immune to the Hymn of Peace for 24 hours; any aggressive action against any affected creature results in all currently affected creatures being rendered immune for 24 hours. Each round of Hymn of Peace counts as two rounds of bardic performance.

A 6th level Virtuoso may improve this performance by spending an additional round of bardic performance per round. If he does, affected creatures' attitude towards the Virtuoso improve by one step for the duration of the performance. Additionally, if the Virtuoso maintains the performance for 10 full rounds, he may make a special Diplomacy check as a free action to improve the attitude of all affected creatures (using their already improved attitude for the base DC). If this check is successful, the attitudes of the affected creatures does not drop when the performance ends (leaving them a total of two steps above their initial attitude).

Jarring Song (Su): A Virtuoso who chooses this performance can create a jarring melody that makes concentration difficult. Anyone attempting to cast a spell within 30 feet of the Virtuoso must make a Concentration check as if attempting to cast the spell defensively. Failure means the spell is wasted. Each round of Calumny counts as two rounds of bardic performance.

A 6th level Virtuoso may improve this performance by spending an additional round of bardic performance per round. If he does, the DC of the Concentration check increases by his class level. Additionally, anyone failing such a Concentration check must make a Will save (DC 10 + Virtuoso class level + Charisma modifier) or be staggered for one round per level of the spell they attempted to cast.

Magic Dance (Su): This mystic performance focuses and empowers spellcasting. Anyone within 30 feet of the Virtuoso receives a +1 bonus to both the caster level of any spells they cast, and any caster level checks they make (such as to overcome spell resistance). Additionally, those affected by this performance receive a bonus on all Concentration checks equal to half the Virtuoso's class level. Each round of Magic Dance counts as two rounds of bardic performance. A 6th level Virtuoso may improve this performance by spending an additional round of bardic performance per round. If he does, those affected by the performance also receive a +1 bonus to the save DC of any spells they cast.

As an immediate action while maintaining the improved version of Magic Dance, the Virtuoso may expend a number of rounds of bardic performance equal to twice the level adjustment of a metamagic feat he knows to apply that feat to a single spell being cast by an affected caster. This does not change the spell level or casting time of the affected spell.

Sharp Note (Su): This piercing high note creates strong vibrations in nearby objects. As long as the performance is maintained, all piercing and slashing weapons within 30 feet of the Virtuoso gain the Keen weapon property (unless they already possess it). Each round of Sharp Note counts as three rounds of bardic performance.

A 6th level Virtuoso may improve this performance by spending an additional round of bardic performance per round. If he does, he may choose one affected weapon per two class levels to also improve its critical modifier by +1. He may change which weapons receive this added benefit as a move action.

Sustaining Song (Su): As long as he maintains this performance, all dying creatures within 30 feet of the Virtuoso automatically stabalize on his turn, and all stable creatures with -1 or less hit points gain a number of hit points equal to half his class level. Each round of a Sustaining Song counts as one round of bardic performance.

A 6th level Virtuoso may improve this performance by spending an additional round of bardic performance per round. If he does, affected creatures also gain Fast Healing equal to 1/3rd the Virtuoso's class level.

Natrual Splendor (Sp): At 2nd level a Virtuoso gains the innate ability to, with a well-placed bit of music or turn of phrase, accentuate the innate beauty of himself and others. He may cast Eagle's Splendor as a spell-like ability with a caster level equal to his class level; however, he casts it as if it had a range of short instead of touch. He may use this spell-like ability once per day per two class levels.

Spells per Day/Spells Known: Beginning at 2nd level, a virtuoso gains new spells per day (and spells known, if applicable) as if he had also gained a level in an arcane spellcasting class to which he belonged before adding the prestige class level. He does not, however, gain any other benefit a character of that class would have gained. If he had more than one arcane spellcasting class before becoming a virtuoso, he must decide to which class to add each level for the purpose of determining spells per day and spells known.

Bonus Feat: At 4th level, and again at 8th, the Virtuoso gains a bonus feat from the following list: Acrobatic, Deceitful, Extra Performance, Iron Will, Magical Aptitude, Master Craftsman, Persuasive, Skill Focus*, Craft Magic Arms and Armor, Craft Wondrous Items, Scribe Scroll, Extend Spell, Silent Spell, Still Spell. The Virtuoso must meet all prerequisites of the feat. *Must choose a Charisma-based skill.

Improve Virtuoso Performance: At 6th level the Virtuoso gains the ability to improve the effect of any virtuoso performance he knows by spending additional rounds of bardic performance. The effects of improving each kind of virtuoso performance are detailed with the performance itself.

Master Savant: At 6th level, the bonus to a Virtuoso's favored performances increases to his class level and he may take 10 on Perform checks with a favored performance even when threats or distractions would normally prevent him from doing so. However, he finds he can no longer put his heart behind any other kind of performance; other Perform skills no longer benefit from the Virtuoso's Charisma modifier (a penalty still applies if the Virtuoso's Charisma modifier is negative, however).

Greater Performances: At 7th and 9th level, a Virtuoso can choose one of the following greater performances in place of or a normal virtuoso performance.

Confusion Waltz (Sp): This nonsensical performance warps those minds of those listening. As soon as the Virtuoso begins this performance, all within 30 feet are affected as per the spell Confusion. Targets may attempt a Will save (DC 10 + Virtuoso class level + Charisma modifier); those who succeed become immune to this effect for 24 hours. Each round of Confusion Waltz counts as three rounds of bardic performance. A Virtuoso may improve this performance by spending an additional round of bardic performance each round. If he does, each affected creature rolls for its behavior twice, and the Virtuoso chooses which roll applies.

Drums of Fury (Su): This loud, angry performance inspires fits of rage in those who hear it. Anyone within 30 feet of the Virtuoso may, on their turn, choose to enter a rage. This functions identically to a barbarian's rage except that it ends immediately if the Virtuoso stops maintaining the performance (leaving the creature fatigued as normal). Creatures who already possess the ability to rage may instead apply the full effects of their own rage without it counting against the number of rounds per day they may range. Each round of Drums of Fury counts as three rounds of bardic performance. A Virtuoso may improve this performance by spending an additional round of bardic performance each round. If he does, each round of his performance as a swift action he may attempt to force an affected creature to enter a berserk rage and be unable to tell friend from foe.

The target of this ability gets a Will save (DC 10 + Virtuoso class level + Charisma modifier) to negate the effect. Creatures already raging (either from this performance or their own rage abilities) receive a -5 penalty on the saving throw. On a failed saving throw, the creature immediately enters a rage and must remain raging as long as the Virtuoso maintains the performance. Creatures affected treat all other creatures as hostile foes as long as their rage lasts. A creature that succeeds its saving throw is immune to this ability for 24 hours. Unlike most virtuoso performances, a Virtuoso cannot affect himself with Drums of Fury.

Mindbending Melody (Sp): This powerfully compulsive song can bend the wills of those who hear it. Unlike most virtuoso performances, the mindbending melody affects only a single target. By immediately expending four rounds of bardic performance the Virtuoso can attempt to dominate a single humanoid as per the spell Dominate Person. The target can make a Will save (DC 10 + Virtuoso class level + Charisma modifier) to negate the effect. As long as the Virtuoso maintains the performance (spending two rounds of bardic performance per round), the victim does not break free of this effect even if it succeeds a saving throw from being given an order against its nature (it simply ignores the order). The domination effect remains for one hour per class level after the Virtuoso stops maintaining the performance. This performance may be improved by spending two additional rounds of bardic performance to start it, and an additional round of bardic performance each round to maintain it. If improved, the performance instead functions like Dominate Monster, except the domination effect ends as soon as the Virtuoso stops performing.

Revealing Dirge (Sp): With this haunting performance, the Virtuoso reveals all things as they truly are. All creatures who can see and hear the performance are affected as per the spell True Seeing, with a caster level equal to the Virtuoso's level. The effect ends immediately if the Virtuoso stops maintaining the performance. Each round of Revealing Dirge uses found rounds of bardic performance. A Virtuoso may improve this performance by spending an additional round of bardic performance each round. If he does, a 30-feet area around him is illuminated by bright light for the duration of this performance, suppressing even supernatural darkness and allowing those within to see with preternatural clarity, granting a +10 bonus on Perception checks for those affected. Additionally, the Revealing Dirge draws attention to all creatures in the area, given a -20 penalty on Stealth checks for anyone within the radius.

Grandiose Splendor (Sp): At 8th level, a Virtuoso may choose to use three of his daily uses of Natural Splendor to instead cast Mass Eagle's Splendor as a spell-like ability with a caster level equal to his class level.

Maestro's Performance (Su): A 10th level Virtuoso gains the ability to unfailingly deliver a performance of breathtaking quality. Once per day, he may take 20 on a Perform check with a favored performance without increasing the amount of time the check takes.

Author's Note: This is my conversion of the Virtuoso class from Complete Adventurer.  One of my players wanted a bardsong-focused prestige class and I found this class and decided to rewrite it.  Not 100% sure about the balance of everything; some of the virtuoso performances might need some tweaking.
