Bone Armor

A grim material to make your armor out of.

Armor smiths can work with the bones of creatures to create armor or shields of masterwork quality. Ten skeletons provide enough bone for a single suit of masterwork banded mail for a creature of the same size, or a suit of full plate for a creture one size smaller. Twenty skeletons provide enough bone for a single suit of full plate for a creature of the same size. All of the skeletons used to craft the armor must be within one size category of each other, otherwise the smith cannot work with the bones properly. If there are a mixture of skeletons within two size categories, treat them as if they were all the smaller size. If the armor smith also wishes, they may create a heavy shield or a light shield from the remains of 5 skeletons, for a creature of the same size or smaller. If the armor or shield is later given the ability to protect the wearer from cold, the cost to add such protection is reduced by 25%.

Bone armor is fragile and unsuitable for use until the spell Stone Bones is cast upon it. Once the spell is cast upon the bone armor, the armor works as though it were steel armor and radiates a minor magic aura.  Casting the spell does not require any additional components other than those in the spell discription and when it is cast upon the armor its duration changes to perminant.

Bone armor that has not had the spell cast upon it is treated like metal armor under the effects of the spell Transmute Metal to Wood. If the bone armor is crafted by a smith with the Craft Magic Arms and Armor feat, the spell does not need to be cast upon it.

Bone armor is lighter than normal armor and weighs half as much. In addition, the armor check penalty is reduced by 2. Arcane spell failure remains unchanged.

Because bone armor isn't made of metal, druids can wear it without penalty. Most druids prefer not to because of the necromatic nature of bone armor.

Bone armor costs twice as much as masterwork armor of that type, but takes no longer to make than ordinary armor of that type (double all Craft results).

Bone armor is has 10 hitpoints per inch of thickness and hardness of 10. Bone armor is typically 1 to 2 inches thick.

Author's Note: I designed this for those who love the undead, and modeled it after the armor found in Libris Mortis. Much of the text is similar to the Dragonhide armor from the core rulebook. The Spell Stone Bones can be found here.
