When you absolutely, positively need to freak out an over-confident player.

Temporal Stasis Bear Pit Trap

CR 8 (4,800 XP)

Type magical/physical; Perception DC 20
Disable Device DC 25

Effects

Trigger location; Reset manual

Effect 3d6 falling damage + creature encounter

This trap works like a typical pit trap with one exception. As soon as a creature falls to the floor of the pit 30 ft. below, the temporal stasis spell holding the wild animal is deactivated. This sets the wild animal loose on the fallen creature, who is now prone. The wild animal released from the temporal stasis spell gets a surprise round and attacks immediately. The CR listed is for a Dire Bear, but can be adjusted accordingly.

Author's Note: I'm anxiously awaiting using this trap to see the look on my player's faces! For a trap that can be reset, try putting a bear-golem in the pit.
